Modern workplaces can be highly noisy environments, especially if you work outdoors on busy construction sites, in manufacturing or are tasked with operating heavy machinery. According to Safe Work Australia, between 28-32% of Australian workers are exposed to loud noise whilst at work. Exposure to excessive noise at work may result in temporary hearing loss or potentially even permanent hearing loss or tinnitus, so it is important to mitigate the risks as much as possible by wearing quality hearing protection. In this blog post, All Trades Safety will be sharing some insight into noise and hearing loss, along with how our range of products can keep your team safe.
Workplace Health and Safety Noise Regulations
Safe Work Australia sets forth two exposure standards for noise, which are:
For the first measure, this means that over the course of an 8 hour shift, a person should not be exposed to any more than 85 decibels.
For the second measure, this means that a person should not be exposed to any noise levels exceeding 140 decibels, as this is severely hazardous to hearing and could cause immediate damage.
These limits are designed to protect people against permanent damage to their hearing. However, ideally you should aim to keep noise levels below 50 decibels in high concentration environments, and below 70 decibels for work requiring high attention or routine tasks.
Reducing Noise in the Workplace
Construction sites are inherently noisy, but with careful planning and noise control measures in place, the hazards can be significantly reduced. Additionally, you should invest in high quality hearing safety equipment including earmuffs, earplugs and wireless communication headsets.
Below we will share some of the benefits of each of these products.
- Quick and easy to use
- Can be adjusted to suit each individual
- Some models have hard hat and visor attachments
- Offers a complete seal around your outer ear
- Comfortable to wear
- Choose from disposable ear plugs or reusable ear plugs depending on your needs/budget
- Offer the best protection against noise as they fit directly into the ear canal
- Lightweight and easy to carry
- Can easily be worn with other PPE gear
- Earplugs need to be fitted properly to provide protection
Wireless Communication Headsets
Wireless communication headsets have the same qualities as earmuffs, except they also allow for crystal clear voice communication. This is particularly useful for workers who need to answer phone calls whilst on the job, or to communicate with other staff. They are particularly useful for industries such as agriculture, construction, forestry, manufacturing, oil and gas, steel and metals, transportation and utilities.
